This is an old one where I said I'd take some quick snaps while getting ready, but could not allocate precious time away from Netflix and my fridge to actually type up.
Vintage and Rockabilly styles are always going to carry that bad-ass cool factor, and ladies these polished looks could not be simpler! If you can roll a cigarette, you can surely roll your hair. For some hair inspo check my Pinterest board here!
Don't have rollers but want volume?
Is your hair damaged but you need to curl it?
Are you a wannabe Imelda May, like all those misfortunes in the Credit Union ads?
Grab your trusty backcombing brush/comb, some kirby grips and some hella-strong hairspray (I opt for Silvikrin Maximum Hold, which can stop a bird in flight, and its in Pennys!) and follow these steps to rocking a vintage look you can tweak to suit. <3
(1) Section the hair which you want to roll, then backcomb like crazy! When I'm doing anything to my hair, initially I look like a troll doll, get crazy with that hairspray underneath your hair, otherwise your rolls will not last the night. Don't worry if the top layers look a bit frizzy you can smooth them later with your comb and spray.
If you are putting rolls or pin curls into wet hair or before bed, I don't generally use any product (mousse etc.)
(2) Grab your length of hair, stretch it up as if you are about to put in a roller, then roll it around your two index fingers. (Your fingers should be within the roll like a chinese finger trap) Rotate your fingers around each other and eh-presto you are rolling! Secure with bobby pins in the centre of the roll, they should be hidden from sight and sprayed in place.
(3) Adjust the sides to ensure roll is a consistent width or play around with it if you would rather an A-symmetric bigger roll! Lightly midst some hairspray across the front of the roll and run the comb lightly over it to tidy any frizz or stray hairs. -->
VOILA there's my victory roll done, a more playful approach to a quiff.
Put some rollers or loose curls in your hair and you're good to go, OR go further by clipping the rest of your hair up like I have done in the next few pics...
If you want a more relaxed look, play around and clip your hair up at random. If you want to go for a more classic look, repeat the rolls with sectioned lengths as outlined above.
These pin-curls are a great look when there is a headscarf around them as a vintage look in themselves, or as a tool to curl hair heat and product free.
Depending on how tight you pin the sections you can achieve volume kinks/flicks/curls that last and do not fall out as heat-induced styles will. For long lasting curls pin wet hair.
If you want, you can do the Rosie the Riveter thing and put a $2 bandana on, a printed headscarf, or some pretty flowers! I always get far too carried away in American Apparel with hair accessories, especially the hairbows!

I very simply pulled about an inch of hair tighter than the rest of the roll, and secured it at the back underneath a roll. I then put big waves in my hair with tongs, sprayed then brushed them out with a wide-toothed brush/comb.
This look would be really cute to put in a little girl's hair!
Add some height at the crown with Batiste XXL Plumping Powder (also in Pennys) or backcomb some more at the sides and back. Don't be afraid to go big, if you've gotten this far, remember, your hair is already pretty unusual...
